IFS Therapy

Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy is increasingly seen as a meaningful complement to Indigenous healing practices. IFS is based on the understanding that the mind is made up of different “parts,” each with its own feelings, thoughts, and roles. This view resonates with many Indigenous perspectives that honour the presence of multiple aspects or spirits within a person.

The IFS model also emphasizes the presence of a core Self (a wise, compassionate inner leader) which aligns with Indigenous teachings about inner balance, interconnectedness and the strength found in self-awareness.

IFS can also offer a gentle and empowering path toward healing and wholeness for individuals and communities navigating the impacts of historical trauma or addiction

"Indigenous cultures throughout the world were familiar and comfortable not only with a spirit world, but also with an inner realm inhabited by many different voices and characters. It may be that the idea of the normal mind as multiple is less a radical departure from established knowledge than it is returning to an age-old wisdom from which “established knowledge” radically departed.  (Schwartz, 2001as cited in this podcast

EMDR & AF-EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and Attachment-Focused EMDR (AF-EMDR) are trauma therapies that help reprocess painful experiences by engaging the brain and nervous system through bilateral tapping, movement or sound. This mirrors what Indigenous and Ancient cultures have long known about the healing power of rhythm, drumming, dancing and movement to release trauma and restore balance.

ALL are welcome.

The land on which our clinics operate have been the traditional land of the Erie, Neutral, Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee, and Mississaugas of the Credit for thousands of years. Making Space Psychotherapy and its staff are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land. We also acknowledge and have gratitude for the knowledge about trauma and connection, and the elements of our work in various modalities that have come from ancient, ancestral and Indigenous or First People's ways of knowing and healing.
