Working with me.
As humans, we often wonder if we are "normal". In our work together, we can explore your concerns to help you feel better about whatever it is that you're experiencing. Fundamentally, I will meet you in the room as a fellow human first.
I am a psychotherapist who specializes in issues around sexuality, relationships, identity (gender, sexuality, self-esteem), and trauma with both individuals and couples. My education and experiences with public health and teaching have informed the way I conceptualize what you share about your experience. During our time together I will help you make sense of it all, and to make space within yourself for compassion.
I take an ecological approach - meaning I don't just look at what's going on within you, but also around you that contributes to how you're feeling, thinking, and behaving.
Our connection as client and therapist can provide a powerful way for you to experience a different relationship than you may have had in the "real world". My relationships with my clients are in fact the most powerful part of this work, and I deeply cherish and honour the opportunity I get to form these meaningful connections.
I will assist you in also looking at your concerns, fears, or issues with curiosity and purpose, rather than judgement. I am comfortable talking, answering questions, and teaching about sexuality - so whatever you bring into the therapy room likely isn't going to be new to me; and if it is, it's not going to scare me off.
Before becoming a psychotherapist, I spent several years as an assistant professor teaching and researching sexual health. Through my public health training, I developed critical thinking as well as problem solving skills, which I bring to my practice as a psychotherapist.
EMDR: I believe our brains are constantly trying to help us or bring our attention to something that needs to be resolved. Our traumatic experiences often get "stuck" in our brains, which kind of drives it crazy! By utilizing EMDR, we will revisit experiences that got stuck and create a pathway for your brain to resolve this experience, which allows it to move on/move forward from that experience and gives you much needed relief.
Let's connect!
Beyond my work.
Growing up I was a horseback rider. Although I didn't realize it at the time, I think the combination of movement, connection with animals, and being outside/in the natural world were what really had an impact on me. I still love being outside and connecting with nature in nice weather, still love animals, and still love moving my body - although these days it's more walking and bike riding, and less jumping fences on horses!
