Women's Therapy
Come as you are. Your story deserves space.
At Making Space Psychotherapy, we know that women carry a lot, and often silently. The pressure to keep it together, to be strong to take care of others before yourself. Maybe you’ve been doing that for so long, it’s hard to even recognize what you need.

Whether you’re dealing with trauma, anxiety, heartbreak, burnout or a deep sense of disconnection therapy can offer you the room to finally turn toward yourself with compassion, clarity, and care.
We specialize in trauma therapy and relationship therapy for women in Hamilton, Burlington, and throughout Ontario. Our women’s therapy specialists are here to support you with life’s hardest moments, past or present, with warmth and expertise.
Why Women’s Therapy?
There’s no single way that pain shows up in women’s lives. For some it looks like anxiety or people-pleasing. For others it’s perfectionism, emotional shutdown or the lingering impacts of childhood trauma. You might feel like you’re “too much” or “not enough” all at once. You might be navigating motherhood, identity shifts, grief or betrayal.
Women’s therapy offers a space where you don’t have to perform, explain or justify your pain. A space where you can talk about what really matters without being interrupted, minimized, or dismissed.
Here your experiences are valid. Your boundaries are respected. And your healing is possible.

How We Work: Trauma Therapy Tailored for Women
At Making Space Psychotherapy we use compassionate, body-aware and non-pathologizing approaches. Our work is rooted in understanding how trauma and relationships shape the nervous system, emotions, and sense of self -- especially for women who have had to survive in systems that haven’t always been safe.
Here are a few of the modalities we use to support women’s healing:
EMDR
When trauma feels like it lives in your body or keeps looping in your mind EMDR can offer a way to move through it without having to talk about every detail. It helps you reprocess distressing memories in a safe, structured way.
For women who have experienced sexual harm, chronic stress or emotional invalidation EMDR can gently reduce the emotional charge of painful memories and bring relief without retraumatization.
We also offer Attachment Focused EMDR (AF-EMDR) an expanded for of EMDR which is a magical option if you have experienced multiple traumatic events, abuse, or attachment injuries as a child or adult. It's also helpful for phobias, mood issues or if you have struggled with standard EMDR in the past.
IFS (Internal Family Systems)
IFS therapy offers a radically compassionate way to understand your inner world. You might have parts of yourself that feel anxious, critical, perfectionistic, numb or ashamed. IFS helps you get to know these parts and make space for healing, not self-blame.
This approach is especially helpful for women who struggle with inner conflict, people-pleasing or feeling like they’ve lost themselves. If you are exhausted from being everything to everyone IFS can help you reconnect with you.
Somatic Therapy
So many women come to therapy saying, “I don’t even feel like I’m in my body”. That’s no surprise! When the body has been a site of trauma, stress, or societal pressure it can feel safer to disconnect.

Somatic therapy focuses on helping you gently return to your body on your own terms. You will build awareness of physical sensations, emotions and nervous system patterns ... and learn how to regulate, soothe and feel safe again.
Key somatic therapy tools include:
-
Breathwork and grounding exercises
-
Gentle movement or posture awareness
-
Guided imagery and mindfulness
-
Somatic Experiencing to release stored tension

Somatic therapy is especially supportive for trauma, anxiety, dissociation and chronic stress. It helps women process what words can’t always reach.

What to Expect in Women’s Therapy
Therapy at Making Space isn’t about advice-giving or quick fixes. It’s about building a relationship with a therapist who sees you (really sees you) and walks beside you as you grow, grieve, unravel and rebuild.
You get to set the pace. You get to change your mind. You get to show up exactly as you are. Some days you might come in with tears. Other days with anger. Or exhaustion. Or silence.
That’s all welcome here. There’s no one “right” way to heal.
